The ultimate guide for selecting the right clothes

1. Understand the shape of your body

Every body indeed comes in different shapes and size. There are different body shapes; namely Apple, Banana, Pear and Hourglass.

Apple (triangle downward)
Apple-shaped women have broader shoulders and bust, and narrower hips.

Banana, or straight (rectangular)
Banana-shaped women’s waist measurement is less than 9 inches smaller than the hip or bust measurement.

Pear, Spoon, or Bell (triangle upward)
Pear-shaped women’s hip measurements are greater than their bust measurements.

Hourglass Shape (triangles opposing, facing in)
Here, the hip and bust are almost of equal size, with a narrow waist.

2. Carefully select the right dresses and Tops

A dress may be hard to find due to its cutting and the material used. Therefore, when picking a dress you should pick one that flattens your body. This would help to define and accentuate your curves. Furthermore, accessories such as a belt that goes around your waist and fitted undergarments would help to achieve this look.

Tops on the other hand should be long to help your body achieve an elongated and tall look. Furthermore, V-neck t-shirts are also effective in elongating your neckline.

3. Choose clothes that are loose
Choosing clothes that are flowy or flared paired with a belt to clinch your dress or top would help to create a streamlined effect and which gives your body a streamlined effect.

4. Wear outfits and accessories that show off your best attributes

Adding accessories to your outfit would not only bring prominence to the clothes you are wearing but also highlight certain parts of your body.

5. Pick accessories that compliment your figure

Accessories are very important in making your outfit stand out. However, accessories should be carefully chosen to ensure that it matches well with the outfit.

It is advisable to choose accessories that go with your body shape and size. Statement jewellery like long necklaces, large pendant necklaces, stacked bangles and cuff bracelets are a good choice because tiny pieces otherwise are likely to get lost in your dressing.

Also when selecting a handbag, try to pick one that is proportional to your body frame so that it doesn’t get lost in your outfit or look like you borrowed someone else’s bag. A few suggestions may include a bucket bag, a large tote, a large structured top-handle purse or an oversize hobo bag. For special dinners and occasions, a generous envelope clutch may be more appropriate.

Your choice should, however, depend on your body build.

6. Avoid wearing loose undergarments

Many people might underestimate the importance of undergarment but it is an important aspect of your dressing. If they are loose, they tend to bunch up under your outfits. If too small they tend to be too tight and hold your body in an awkward and uncomfortable way. Your undergarment is the foundation for whatever goes over it and if it isn’t the right fit or colour, it could cramp your style and the fashion sense you wish to portray.

7. Always maintain a good posture

Maintaining a good posture by keeping your body in proper alignment and maintaining that alignment as you move will make you look confident and less slouchy and bulky. So whether you are sitting or walking, the best posture to maintain is: straighten your back, lift your chest and try to suck in your tummy.
