Money saving tips

Money can be especially hard to save in Singapore as we are surrounded by shopping malls and the prevalence of online shopping has made shopping a breeze. However, there are times when we find ourselves short on cash. Here are some money saving tips we can follow:

1. Always allocate the spending money for the month.
It is important to set aside money before determining how much we should save. This would ensure that there would be savings every month and that we will not overspend.

2. Make a list before grocery shopping
The aisles in the supermarket may be designed in a way to encourage you to spend money unnecessarily. Therefore, a list may be helpful in helping you keep to your budget.

3. Buy in bulk
Buying household items in bulk such as value packs will be cheaper than buying them individually.

4. Reuse
There is a common saying, 'A man's trash is another man's treasure', well you can find treasure in your trash! For example, if you're thinking of throwing away your old bedsheet, you can actually cut it into a tablecloth or make cleaning rags from it.

5. Shop at flea markets

It is great to shop global brands but a lot of them cost an arm and a leg these days. Why not find a great bargain at the local flea markets. After all, these markets offer unique items at economical prices.

The Red Dot Design Museum Singapore organises an inventive marketplace – MAAD, Market of Artists and Designers (MAAD) – for Singapore’s art and design community to showcase their creations.

6. Shop online and use cashback sites
Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular. Therefore, there are many cashback sites such as Shopback, Lazada, Asos, Zalora, Deliveroo and Book Depository where you can save money.

7. Shop at outlet stores for great bargains

Shopping malls such as Changi City Point and IMM is filled with outlets stores with brands such as Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Triump etc. These products are off season products which are sold at slashed prices.

8. Walk or bike
If you don't usually have the time to work out or excercise, you should walk when travelling from one place to another. Walking is good for your heart and your wallet as well. If you would like to stay outdoors but need a faster way to travel from one place to another, you can always rent an OFO or a Mobike. These are bike sharing services which allow you to unlock a bike near you through an app. It costs around $0.50 to $1.00 per 30 minutes.
